My Photographic Background
I grew up in the analogue world of 35mm film cameras during the 1980s. Film photography is the aesthetic the seems most natural to me. I never studied photography in the traditional sense. I am largely self taught with a visual style that can be best described as cinematic and classic.
What makes my work different?
I shoot film, specifically medium format film which creates high resolution images. This is in contrast to the trend of digital photography amongst photographers today.
The film medium is one crucial flavour of my work. The other key characteristic of my work is consciousness. Through years of daily meditation practices I have explored the nature of my consciousness.
Some years ago I started a journey of awakening. This process matured so as to become a daily experience. I live life with an underlying sense of unity with everyone and everything. When I photograph a flower I perceive the flower as a living being with a personality. I also experience a phenomena that I call "mirroring." I perceive that the flower and I are made of the exact same divine light of life that we call consciousness. Even the camera becomes an extension of my physical, mental and emotional self.
My art has a specific purpose
Art has the power to transform consciousness. If the artist can tune their awareness to the infinite they can transfer infinity onto the canvas. The film prints I create are intended to act much like a transcending meditation practice. The degree to which the artist is awake to the Self will be reflected in the work.
Do I dislike digital?
I love digital cameras and often use them for portraiture. However I have found that digital cameras do not have the ability to accurately capture the meditation experience.
